advice needed

Post by shauna on May 11th 2008, 7:16 pm

Hi, We've adopted a bit of land near Church street that has been dumped on and used for bonfires for some time. We have some gardening experience but could do with some advice on how to clear it and cultivate it. So far we have got rid of the rubbish and started to dig out the rocks. It is also covered in grass and nettles.

Unfortunately there is no access to electricity so we are also wondering how to strim it. Is there anyone out there who could advise?

You might have already been told this but Parkers Tool Hire just past Gordon Riggs on the left hand side hire a lot of equipment out (large and small)..... rotivators etc. and have quite reasonable rates.

A riddler might be of use to you if you can get hold of one. It is a giant soil sieve. I use one on my son's garden which I have as a sort of allotment as he lives next-door-but-one and isn't interested in the garden. This is a mining and pottery area - the soil is absolutely awful - mainly clay and rocks. But the riddler converts bucketsful of the awful stuff to usable soil.

We also have to make lots of compost, which you could make from the weeds and dead leaves. I bit of lime shaken in gets it going. I found a broken rubbish bin and turned it upside down, and cut a space out of the bottom (now the top) to put stuff in, and stuck a board on it with a brick to hold it down.

I found the riddler under his house: I didn't know what it was at first, but soon found it's use.

we do quite well for compost, most folk here do it and the council sell compost bins at reduced prices, the council also have compost days when they give away compost they have made.
We had a lot of mining here once upon a time and we are surrounded on all sides by hills with rocky outcrops of Gritstone, so in those respects we are similar. Just the climate is very different. bigrindaisy
