Herb Garden

Post by Little Fox on May 4th 2008, 12:22 am

I 'm ready to start my herb garden but as a novice I really need advice. How's best to proceed in Tod with this undertaking? I have a few starter plants ready and waiting. 4 from Gordon Rigg and 1 from Morrisons! Any advice welcome.

We've got 2 types of Thyme, Chamomile & a seperate tallish (12 inches) Rosemary tree. But we are going to get basil, sage, corriander. Plus maybe some salad type stuff too. so watercress. But nice for it to look good too ie colours /size so any advice on that is good.

I know that Rosemary definitely doesn't like cold we ground, does like he sun, and can grow about waist height, sow will need to go behind the smaller plants.

All the thyme's are easy just put them in anywhere that gets the sun and they will establish quickly, they stay low just an inch or two high nice little cushion's will get the best from them if you keep them neat by clipping the tips out if they start to get straggly.
I am not sure if Basil is hardy outside all year round up here, but I think it is probably OK for the summer.
When Lovage is here again she can tell you much more about herbs than I can, she is a wiz with a herb garden

Hi little fox.... sorry I wasn't around earlier... was out in the community herb garden today doing some more planting and titivating....

if you want to email me privately, I'd be happy to meet up and have a look at your plot and what you've already got....

Sage and coriander grow pretty well in Todorden... the basil might be better on the window sill,....how about some lovage? there's some in the herb garden, maybe we could meet one evening in the herb garden ad I can talk you through what grew well last year and what we're trying for the first time this year... if you want some basil, I'll have some ready for the seed/plant swap on Sunday 18th may up at the unitarian church... in fact am thinking it might be a good idea to do a herb session that afternoon...end of may is plenty early enogh for most herb growing....

let me know what you think... I can bring you some loveage...and if you want salady things then sorrel grows very well in tod too...

love lovage x

the most important thing for herbs are
sun- put them where the sun shines most
not too glooggy damp soil, put some sand in , think hot meditiraian {dont do spelling]
herbs dont have any sort of manure they dont need it,
If you can get to near me i will give you some rosemary and mint.
hope thats a bit helpful, the best news is plants want to grow, they dont have moods or motives just to get big and strong.

Excellent advice. I need it! Very much a novice. Slugs have virtually ate one of the Thyme plants so have now ringed the herbs with grit type stuff!

Thanks for your kind offer Lovage. The Herb session and swap thing on the 18th sounds very good too. It would be great if you could come over and have a look and advise. How do I get to email you? I don't seem able to click on your name? I think I'm doing it wrong.

Thanks for your kind offer of herbs Mary Mary where abouts are you in Todmorden?
