Growing from seed

Post by Sunflower on April 20th 2008, 4:18 pm

hello all, we're in the process of starting a garden from scratch, we live in a new-build so I thought a 'cottage garden' feel would detract from the angular nature of our surroundings. Up to now I've just been sowing a few seeds whilst my other half does the donkey work laying the patio etc. I'm keen to grow my own Rudbekia, yet after 21 days my seeds are not growing No Any ideas what might have gone wrong? My Cornflowers and Cosmos are coming on ok and were planted at the same time.

any help much appreciated

the campanule i planted from seed didnt do very well, have them outside now but they are very little weedy things,, i have been told the seeds were probably out of date (didnt know that could be ) but checked the packet they came in and its has a date from last year on it so it is probably right, will look out for that next time i buy seeds

...growing from seed has been quite a success, my Cosmos is 4ft with gorgeous romantic blooms, the Cornflowers went a bit wild and kept falling over, which I don't actually mind I think they look good tumbling accross the path. I grew some Verbascum, which hasn't flowered yet, although it did say August on the packet so I might be in with a chance. My Rudbekia was more difficult, packet number one didn't do a thing, I think I put them in too early though. Approx 6 plants have grown from packet number 2, but they look a bit small. I bought some much bigger ones from the garden centre for £1.99 so I think time and money wasted on the seeds leads me to conclude that I'll buy Rudbekia next year. The Echinacea are a bit slow too, but I'm hopeful that they'll be ok by next year. All in all I'm pleased with my efforts and first time growing from seed - my Cosmos are my favourite by far!
