Mushrooms

Post  Frances Farmer on April 25th 2008, 9:48 am

I'm interested in starting to grow mushrooms (not the magic or mouldy variety) for cooking any ideas where to start and what I start with?

Thanks for the link. I found Dobbies garden centre in Southport that have a kit much cheaper ( in case it's a flop) so if it's in stock I might take a drive over there this weekend with the kids after orienteering at Witton Park in Blackburn. Plus they can let off steam in the sand dunes What a Face

sounds like a good plan, let us know how you get on, I do love mushrooms myself, I like the button ones raw, so just picking one as soon as it pops up and eating it would be great.
You could post on the calender section when yous start them.

There are ordinary button mushroom growing kits i Gordon Rigg's at the moment... dunno how successful they are... my dad bought a kit once... nothing ever happened to it... eventually he got fed up and sprinkled the compost over the field neighbouring his property... he's had lovely mushrooms from that field for over twenty years now!!!

Spoils sport affraid lol!
I meant up on the hill at the back under some of the trees the leaf mould looks perfect and the mycelium could stay undisturbed for years. They wouldn't be in the way, and we could pick our brecky mushrooms on a nice morning stroll.

I once had one of those kits, it was pretty good for a couple of weeks then nowt much..
I live at Harleywood and years ago there were loads of mushrooms in the playing field at the back of our house, but I haven't seen any for donkeys years. My dad used to go pick them every morning!
